The IRC network
To use IRC, all you need is a program called client that will let you connect to a host machine, also known as server.
That server, connected to other servers, form the backbone of the IRC network.
Once connected, you can join a channel (how to proceed depends on the client) and start typing. Your client will send everything you type to the server, which in turn will broadcast it to the other users on the channel through the other servers.
This simplicity makes IRC easy to use by anyone.
