A couple of years ago, Jarkko Oikarinen wrote a program called IRC (for Internet Relay Chat). It was supposed to be an improved talk, letting you chat with several friends in real time.
Since the time of Jarkko and his friends, IRC has evolved to a huge network with thousands of users in hundreds of channels. People from all around the world join IRC to have a real-time conversation with their friends on the other side of the planet but also to get acquainted with people from different cultures.
On some special occasions, IRC also becomes a great medium to give and receive news. After the earthquake in Los Angeles a year ago, after the recent Oklahoma bombing, channels would be created for real-time updates and discussions.
Some specialized channels also exist where you can get help on a given subject. But most people would enjoy IRC just for its ability to provide nice real-time conversations with people worldwide.
