What's
New
03/13/03
I've determined that Matthew SHERWIN (the elder)
was probably born Dec 23, 1798 in Bucknall Cum Bagnall, Staffordshire, Eng. to
John SHERWIN and Hannah ???. His siblings were Hannah, Thomas,
Joseph, Enoch, George, Mary, and William. I will be adding this
information to the family tree section over the next couple of
weeks.

I just received the death certificate for Ann
(SLATER) SHERWIN and have verified that her father's name was Samuel and
discovered that her mother's name was Eliza DAVIES. Through searching the
internet for information on Eliza, I found that her parent's were James DAVIS
(I'm finding that DAVIS and DAVIES are almost interchangeable) and Ann
FRETWELL. All of this new information really pulls the pieces of the 1881
British census puzzle together -- click here
With this new information I've also been able to find another 60+ ancestors
of Eliza DAVIES some going back to the 1600s. In the coming weeks I'll be
adding this information to the family tree.

1881 British Census
-
I recently purchased
the 1881 British Census on CD (23 cds to be more precise). Matthew
SHERWIN does not show up in this census, nor does Ann SHERWIN show up as a
head of a household. What I did find is a Clara and Elizabeth SHERWIN,
listed as grand daughters of the head of the household, Samuel SLATER.
The ages and birthplaces listed for them are consistent with my
information. Samuel SLATER is the name I have for Ann Sherwin's
father. Also in this household is listed an Alice FRETWELL and a
Sarah Ann FRETWELL listed as a neice.
-
In another household, I found
a Jane and Ellen SHERWIN listed as the niece of the head of the household,
Hannah SHERWIN. Hannah could be the wife an as yet unknown brother of
Matthew.
-
Finally, in a 3rd household I
found an Ann and Eliza Ann SHERWIN listed as visitors in the household of
William and Mary DAVIES. It's interesting that Mary DAVIES was born in
the same place as Samuel SLATER. I'm searching for information on the
internet on these other households to prove or disprove my theory that in
1881 the SHERWIN family was scattered amongst 3 households due to the
absence of Matthew (who may have been out of the country, hospitalized, in
jail, in the military, etc.)
