Matthew Henry Sherwin was born June 9, 1845 in Dilhorne, Staffordshire, England to Matthew and Jane (Salt) Sherwin.  He was a collier (coal miner) as was his father.  He married Ann Slater who was from Hanley, Staffordshire.  In 1869 when their first child was born, they were living in Swinton, South Yorkshire.  Eventually they moved to the nearby town of Wombwell.
In the winter of 1889, Matthew, Ann, and their 8 children emigrated to the United States.  They left from Liverpool England on  February 3, 1889 and arrived in Philadelphia on or about February 22.  After living in Osceola Mills, Centre County, PA, the family finally settled in Barnesboro, PA (Cambria County).  Matthew continued as a coal miner in the U.S.  He and Ann were devout Christians who regularly attended St. John's United Methodist Church on Chestnut St. in Barnesboro.

This was a 3,864 gross ton ship, built by Harland & Wolff, Belfast in 1882 for British owners. Her details were - length 420.1ft x beam 42.2ft, one funnel, four masts, single screw and a speed of 12 knots. Launched in December 1882, she was chartered to American Line and commenced her maiden voyage from Liverpool to Philadelphia on 28th April 1883.
