Sherwin, Matthew H., 1847-1921, of Barnesboro, PA, patriarch of Sherwin family

REF: Barnsboro Star, 22 Sep 1921 (available on microfilm, Barnesboro Library):

"Death Claims Two Aged Local Men" [I only recorded one of the two] "Matthew H. Sherwin of 2508 Chestnut Ave died Saturday morning at 2 o'clock"

"Saturday morning at 2 o'clock death came to the relief of Matthew H. Sherwin of 2508 Chestnut Avenue. Mr. Sherwin had been in ill health for a number of years and for the past year or more was confined to his bed and suffered great pain all the time until his relief came in death. He was born in Stratfordshire, England, in 1847. He came with his family to this country about 30 years ago and lived in Philipsburg for about 10 years and has spent the remainder of his time in Barnesboro where he had been widely known and greatly loved. Mr. Sherwin was a Christian gentleman in every sense of the term. He was practically all his life a member of the Methodist Church and was a devout worshipper, mighty in prayer, apt in the word of God, rich in religious experience, and triumphant in death."

"Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church [St John's] Tuesday aftenoon at 2 o'clock conducted by the pastor, the Rev. George A. Duvall and were largely attended which showed the high esteem in which the aged gentleman was held. The services were exceptionally impressive; the pastor called it a victory service."

"The deceased was 74 years, 3 months, and 8 days old. Interment was made in North Barnesboro Cemetery. Besides the widow, 13 children survive, and there are 44 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
