The Kansas Board of Education
(Printed in the "Poet's Corner" of the Towanda Daily Review on Sept. 26, 1999.)

Lyrics by John L. Ferri
(to 19th Nervous Breakdown.)

It's the kind of lie that just won't die -- intelligent design,
that fascination for creation by something divine.
No matter what the record says, geology gets slammed,
"Let there be light", it must be right, biology be damned.

(chorus)
You better stop. Look around.
Here they come. Here they come.
Here they come. Here they come.
The Kansas Board of Education.

They said that no one was around as witness to the start,
That evolution and the Bang are theories without heart.
Equal time is what they want to preach at state expense,
but what they need is education in some common sense.

(chorus)
You better stop. Look around.
Here they come. Here they come.
Here they come. Here they come.
The Kansas Board of Education.
Oh who's to blame. That board is insane.
They can't get in the front door, so they're sneakin' in the back door.
Ooo, Ooo, Ooo, Ooo.

The Board ignored reality, and went with Genesis,
They really want creation to get much more emphasis.
But since creation's based on nothing but an ancient myth,
It can't be taught as science; evolution took the hit.

(chorus)
You better stop. Look around.
Here they come. Here they come.
Here they come. Here they come.
The Kansas Board of Education.
Oh who's to blame. That board is insane.
They can't get in the front door, so they're sneakin' in the back door.
Ooo, Ooo, Ooo, Ooo.

Dorothy lived in Kansas a few decades in the past,
She was in Oz, fought for a cause, gained wisdom unsurpassed.
But Kansas is a different place now; science is a mess,
And Scarecrows rule that Kansas Board, the Board of Brainlessness.

(chorus)
You better stop. Look around.
Here they come. Here they come.
Here they come. Here they come.
The Kansas Board of Education.
The Kansas Board of Education.
The Kansas Board of Education.
The Kansas Board of Education.

(fade out -- as the Kansas Board should.)

(On February 14, 2001, a newly-seated Kansas State Board of Education voted 7-3 to restore evolution to the Kansas science education standards. However, in 2005 the Kansas State Board of Education, with new conservative members, got stupid again and is introducing Intelligent Design into its studies of biology.)
