What is considered to be
the "crown jewel" of the FAFD, this 1956 American LaFrance 100 foot tillered
aerial ladder originally served the City of Bridgeport, Connecticut as
Ladder Six. In 1982, the rig received a facelift with the installation
of a new Century series cab, new axles, air brakes, power steering, Detroit
6-71T diesel and Allison MT-644 automatic transmission. Also included
in this facelift were new compartments on the trailer and an enclosed tiller
cab. In 1989 the aerial ladder was replaced with a new ALF "deep-web"
type. The truck, which was the last tillered aerial on the Bridgeport
roster, was removed from service in 1994, due in part to manpower cutbacks.
It was kicked about the department until 1996 when it was stripped and
sold to a Bridgeport firefighter. Lacking storage, he was forced
to sell it in May of 1997 to Rich Sitler. A complete restoration
(eventually) is planned. Currently, we're just putting the pieces
back on and having fun!
