Nota Bene: If you are a geocacher, and you haven't found this one,
you may not want to proceed... there are a number of photos here that
may be spoilers.
| You start in a parking lot in which you find this
historical marker. For my part, I find it amazing that there was
a gravity railroad from all the way up in Hawley down to Pittston!
Later on, you find yourself on the old railroad bed for a while.
But there's a bit of a climb before you get that
far...
This is my second trip to this mountain. I was here in
late spring, when I was still pretty green at this geocaching thing,
and I did not make a find. It's been haunting me a bit ever since, but
the place was so nice, I resolved to bring reinforcements! And over
Labor Day weekend, I dragged Holly and JR up the hill. They weren't
disappointed!
This mountain seems at times to
be one solid rock, but there are also places of beautiful green
forest.

If you look closely in the photo
above, and in the one to the left, you can see the stonework ruins
that must have been a part of the old railroad, for the next part
of the walk is on a gradual incline - clearly a railroad bed,
and a welcome relief!
| You will be climbing some more,
but if you take it slowly, you will see some nice things... |
Like gossamer cobwebs... |
| And a stray branch
that wants it to be autumn! |
And then there is the top.
The roads curving around on the left are Interstate
84, and on the right (just in front of Holly's nose), Interstate
380. See! You have been (almost)
here before! The highways intersect just below you, though you
can't see it from way up here.
Dad ponders the clues,
while Holly grins for Uncle Jim's camera, but in the end, it's Holly
that makes the find!
Holly ponders the cache log -
notes from prior finders.
And we take a few things, leave a few things (the
WVIA and epix magnets and the Trivial Puruit cards).
This is a cache, in case you haven't figured that
out.
OK, I admit it... I like this pic! And the one
below... Someone put a flag up here which must be visible from
I084 and I-380. How cool is that!
Looking north from the top.
There are marvelous and
strange things up here - the deer guarding the summit, a humongous
ant hill... |
And a very odd fireplace! |
| |
And so we descend... |
| Taking time, as usual, to find the
little things of beauty. |
| And if anyone wants to
see this place, I'll be glad to serve as a guide... There's much
I have missed. |
With thanks to renagadejane for a wonderful cache hunt!
