These checks are optional to verify the location and muscles.  Motion can be used to locate most muscles.

Place index fingers in the appropriate area of muscle location.  Then request the patient to engage the appropriate isolated kinetics.
 

Muscle	Requested Patient Procedure
First and Second Branch Levatores	Raise shoulder (one at a time, feel same side while patient is in sitting position)
Obliquus Capitis Inferior	Turn face quickly, rotation "flick" (felt same side while patient is supine)
Rectus Capitis Posterior Major	Extend head (both felt while patient is seated)

 
Note: These checks are performed in various patient positions, however, patient should be returned to the supine position for palpation once the muscle has been located.
