Rather than clutter the main page up with too much information, I've placed some secondary (but still interesting) items here. If I can figure out a graceful way to present it all on the main page, I'll change it.
There were two different colophons used on the series. The first was a
unicorn's head with a flowing mane, the second a unicorn's head in silhouette
surrounded by a circle (I'll try to provide scans in the near future).
Here's the breakdown of colophon usage:
First style: Series titles 1 through 8.
Second style: Series titles 9 through 65.
Two different Ballantine logo's were used during the series run. The first
was a larger, nearly rectangular double "B" (with the first reversed). The
second was smaller and more oval in shape (still with the double "B").
Here's the logo breakdown:
First logo: Series titles 1 through 59.
Second logo: Series titles 60 through 65.
Two cover prices existed through the series run, here's the breakdown:
$.95: Series titles 1 through 33, 36.
$1.25: Series titles 34, 35, 37 through 65.
Many artists were used for the Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series, though
Gervasio Gallardo dominates with a total of 25 covers. The cover artist was
listed inside the book starting with series title 6. The earlier titles are
possible to tell because the artist name is on the cover.
Here's a breakdown, by artist and covers done (by series number):
Gervasio Gallardo: 3, 5, 12, 14, 15, 20, 21, 23, 26, 32, 36, 37, 38, 39,
41, 47, 52, 53, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 65.
Bob Pepper: 2, 4, 8, 18, 19, 27, 28, 30, 46.
Ray Cruz: 9, 13, 17, 31.
Robert LoGrippo: 25, 48, 49, 50.
David Johnston: 33, 35, 51, 54.
Sheryl Slavitt: 6, 7.
George Barr: 16, 24.
Ian Miller/Millar: 45, 64.
Brian Froud: 34, 44.
Dean Ellis: 42, 63.
Alan Mardon: 61, 62.
Ron Walotsky: 1.
Frank C. Pape': 11.
Donna Violetti: Interiors for 11.
Ralph Iwamoto & Kathleen Zimmerman: 22.
Bill Martin: 29.
Vincent di Fate: 40.
Peter Le Vasseur: 43.
Several titles were reprinted while the series was running, one would assume
the better selling titles.
Here's a breakdown of reprints:
THE KING OF ELFLAND'S DAUGHTER, Lord Dunsany. 9/73.
THE WOOD BEYOND THE WORLD, William Morris. 1/74.
LILITH, George Macdonald. 9/73.
THE DREAM-QUEST OF UNKNOWN KADATH, H.P. Lovecraft. 7/71.
THE WELL AT THE WORLD'S END, Vol. 1, William Morris. 12/72 & 9/73.
THE WELL AT THE WORLD'S END, Vol. 2, William Morris. 12/72 & 9/73.
THE BROKEN SWORD, Poul Anderson. 9/73.
RED MOON AND BLACK MOUNTAIN, Joy Chant. 11/73.
THE LOST CONTINENT, C.J. Cutcliffe-Hyne. 9/73.
THE SONG OF RHIANNON, Evangeline Walton. 9/73.
THE CHARWOMAN'S SHADOW, Lord Dunsany. 9/73.
THE PEOPLE OF THE MIST, H. Rider Haggard. 4/74. ($1.50 cover price)
NOTE: The second printing of RED MOON AND BLACK MOUNTAIN is of special interest as it has different artwork than the original. The art on the first printing was done by Bob Pepper, the reprint artwork is by Ian Millar. To my thinking this makes the second printing of RED MOON AND BLACK MOUNTAIN a necessary addition to a Ballantine Adult Fantasy set.
