Welcome to the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) web page for alt.books.ghost-fiction, a USENET newsgroup. If you are wondering just what USENET and newsgroups are, there is an informative web page here.
This HTML version is expanded over the Mini-FAQ, which is posted periodically to the alt.books.ghost-fiction newsgroup. Both versions maintained by Bill Allison. Ghostly graphic provided by Rob Suggs.
Charter: "Dedicated to the discussion of the very best supernatural fiction, focusing especially on --but not limited to-- the literature growing out of the classic English ghost stories of the Victorian and Edwardian periods."
Authors discussed will include early ground-breakers such as J. Sheridan LeFanu, M.R. James, and William Hope Hodgson through modern day greats such as Robert Aickman, Ramsey Campbell, and Terry Lamsley. A FAQ will be posted on a regular basis, a weekly "read, then discuss" session is planned as well. While film discussion is not the purpose of the group, discussions of films with a ghostly basis or based on a famous ghost story are considered to be on-topic. Posting of supernatural books for sale is permitted. Spamming is unwelcome, as is trolling or random acts of senseless flaming.
Just what is "ghost fiction" anyway?
Who are some publishers of ghost fiction?
Are there any ghostly titles by mainstream publishers?
I'm new to this ghost stuff, can you recommend some titles to get started with?
I'm on a book budget, is there any hope for me?
Are there any journals available for ghost fiction fans?
What are some ghost/supernatural fiction-related or book related Web sites?
Are there any other supernatural-related newsgroups or mailing lists?
Are there any ghost/supernatural stories posted on the web?
Simply put, ghost stories that are "made up" as opposed to accounts of "true" hauntings (there is another newsgroup devoted to true ghost stories, check the Newsgroups section). As to what comprises a fictional "ghost story", Richard Dalby, noted anthologist and specialist in supernatural literature, in the introduction to his anthology The Sorceress In Stained Glass and other ghost stories, states:
The term "ghost story" has a much wider meaning now than it had a hundred years ago. Whereas it used to only feature "phantasms of the dead", it now signifies any of the many branches of the supernatural, from elementals to fairies, vampires and zombies, to transference of souls.

Along with their more widely known Lovecraft and WEIRD TALES circle titles, Arkham House has done many worthy ghost volumes. Less than half a dozen remain in print, available direct, from dealers, or Amazon.com. Direct from the publisher these are priced from $15.95. As these are all hardcovers with nice DJ's, they are a good value. Wilkins-Freeman and Bowen are considered among the finest of ghost fiction authors. The Le Fanu title is composed of lesser-known stories, while the Shiel title is composed of stories of detection (but with a weird enough feel to satisfy a fan of the macabre).

In the mid-1970's Arno Press reprinted many obscure supernatural and fantasy titles in modest hardbound editions. While some of these have since gone out of print, many appear to be still available from Ayer (who I assume bought out Arno some time ago). While I have purchased several titles myself, I can't vouch for just what is available as some titles may literally be down to a copy or two in stock. Rather than try to provide a title listing, I'll suggest having a look at their web site and phoning in to check on availability of any titles of interest.
Ghosts on the Internet (or in the Mall)
This is a listing of titles you can pick up from Amazon.com or perhaps find at your local bookseller. I used Amazon's search engine to come up with this list. Almost all the titles were said to be available in "2 to 3 days". Most are priced under $28 retail, and you can often expect a discount from Amazon. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of titles I found, being picky I came up with 35+ titles that are well worth a closer look. My listing format is title, author or editor, publisher, and retail price (the pricing info is outdated, but I have left it in to serve as a rough guide). In the case where the book's title contains the author's name, I don't bother listing the author name. If anyone orders one of these and finds it has gone out of print, please email me and I'll pull it from the list.

The Wise book is over 1000 pages and is a fantastic way to pick up a bunch of classic stories in a single book. I don't think the Chambers and Machen books are really classed as "ghost" titles but they are horror classics and worth getting regardless. THE OXFORD BOOK OF GOTHIC TALES, while not a ghost anthology, features an interesting lineup. The reissue of two Hugh Lamb anthologies by Dover Publications is an exciting development, we can only hope there will be more to follow!
I'm new to this ghost stuff, can you recommend some titles to get started with?
If you're looking for a great "one book" horror/ghost collection, then go with GREAT TALES OF TERROR AND THE SUPERNATURAL. If you already have some horror collections and want to get a more ghost-centric volume go with THE OXFORD BOOK OF ENGLISH GHOST STORIES as a start and get VICTORIAN GHOST STORIES: AN OXFORD ANTHOLOGY as a follow-up. From these you should get an idea what authors you might like to pursue story collections of.
I'm on a book budget, is there any hope for me?
Well if you can raise five bucks (skip lunch one day), you could pick up these:
THE MOONLIT ROAD AND OTHER GHOST AND HORROR STORIES
Ambrose Bierce
Dover
$1.00
GREAT GHOST STORIES
John Grafton, ed.
Dover
$1.00
CLASSIC GHOST STORIES
John Grafton, ed.
Dover
$2.00
GREEN TEA AND OTHER GHOST STORIES
J.S. Le Fanu
Dover
$1.00
Splurge a bit and also get the following:
A BOTTOMLESS GRAVE AND OTHER VICTORIAN TALES OF TERROR
Hugh Lamb, ed.
Dover
$2.50
The Grafton-edited anthologies are a nice value for the money, as they contain stories by names like James (M.R.), Swain, Benson (E.F.), and LeFanu. Ghost-heads will likely have most of these stories in other anthologies/collections in their libraries already. The Hugh Lamb anthology is urgently recommended to all who don't already have it under its original title VICTORIAN NIGHTMARES.
