October 27, 2005 Budget Workshop:

No Property Tax Increase for 2006:

The budget looks like 1.25 mils will be sufficient for 2006. There seems to be enough money to do work to the roof on the township building. This has been put off for quite some time. We will try to put $80,000 into a surplus account to have available for contingencies. For example, I remember the year of hurricane Floyd we spent approximately $60,000 repairing damage to township property adjacent to streams.

Possible Per-Capita Tax elimination for 2006:

Perhaps the most interesting thing that developed during the meeting pertains the Per Capita Tax. Right now the school district and the township Per Capita Tax both appear on the same bill. The school district is considering switching to another billing method. Currently, it costs the township about 20 cents for each dollar of Per Capita tax collected. If the school district makes this change the cost to the township of collecting the per capita tax is likely to increase further. In contrast, the cost to collect the property tax is about 1.3 cents per dollar. The township collects about $450K in property tax, and the township nets about $20K in per capita tax. It seems better to just forgo the $20K and not irritate people with yet another little bill. We have asked the treasurer/secretary to investigate eliminating the per capita tax. The treasurer/secretary, Diane Hollenbach, did a good job on the budget, and made this observation on the in efficiency of the Per Capita Tax.
