Some of my thoughts and concerns for June of 2005:

You can view the official Township meeting minutes at:

I still have copies of the Fredrick Bastiat book “The Law” available to Maidencreek residents

Gloria Kemmerer has resigned as Supervisor.

Gloria has served the township faithfully since she replaced Terry Rarrick when he resigned. Two years ago Gloria ran unopposed for the supervisor position. Her resignation was for personal reasons, and was unexpected. Gloria gave a tremendous amount of time to the township, and had a great attention to detail. She was an asset to the board, and will be missed.

The attorney has researched the process of selecting a new supervisor. At this time it seems the supervisors (or perhaps the vacancy board if Bob and I can not agree) will appoint someone who will serve until the next election. The person appointed or other interested people will have to run in the next election for the balance of Gloria's term.

Bob and I will meet at 8:00 PM June 30th to try to fill this vacancy, if Bob and I can not agree we will schedule a meeting of the vacancy board at the June 30th meeting. If you are interested in serving the township on the board of supervisors please contact Bob Kopfer or myself. You can use the email link at the bottom of this page to let me know your interest.

Other items:

The meeting was fairly normal in other ways. We discussed the township newsletter, and decided that it should not be used for campaigning, but candidates for office will have to get their message out at their own expense.

Sewage Sludge:

It seems at least one farmer in Maidencreek is spreading sewage sludge on his land. We received a complaint from an adjacent farmer that this is not closely monitored by DEP. It seems there is an opportunity for run off to adjacent land owners and the lake that provides Reading with drinking water. This board has come down hard on sewage leaks in the past that threaten the health of neighbors, and it looks like this practice of spreading sludge has many of the same attributes of a sewage leak. On the one hand I do not want to burden farmers with township ordinances, but I also am concerned about the effects of sewage sludge on adjacent land owners, and the heavy metals the sludge is pro ported to contain. Bob and other farmers present at the meeting assured me that this is not a normal farming practice. Some of the farmers in the area have already met to provide us with the draft of the agricultural portion of the zoning ordinance. We will have them meet agin to advise the supervisors on this sewage sludge issue.
