The February Supervisors' Meeting:
One of the more time consuming portions of the meeting was deciding how to deal with the “Praise Christian Fellowship” plans to modify the old machine shop building. They won an appeal of our zoning hearing board's rejection of their variance request ( you can read background from July of 2008 here ) They do not plan on changing the building foot print or impervious surface on the lot. It was decided to have them submit what would be essentially a truncated land development plan that would show that they are in compliance with all zoning.
One thing I found interesting about this whole thing is that the judge just overturned our zoning hearing board ruling, but the court order gave no reason. I was hoping we could learn from this court order, but since the judge gave no reason, I suppose it's any body's guess as to why he decided to allow for the land owner's wishes. I hope it is because the judge appreciates the importance of property rights.
Interesting internet videos:
With the whole national scene and the federal government response to the economy, I thought you may find these several videos interesting:
The first is a commentary/tutorial on the types of government and the purpose of government. It is very well done.
The second video is a Milton Freedman interview. Toward the end of the first part Dr. Friedman says, “Government is an institution whereby the people who have the greatest drive to get power over their fellow men get into a position of controlling them.” This observation is very true, and whenever we get into a voting booth we need to ask ourselves the question, “Which of these candidates is going to concern himself with protecting my God given liberties, and which of these candidates merely wants to assert control over my life?” All too often candidates from both parties want to expand their control at the expense of our liberties and our constitution (both state and federal)
The Third video is a Mike Wallace interview of Ayn Rand. If you are running short on time, just watch part 2. In the second part, Mike Wallace shows what a complete socialist he is (contrast Mike Wallace's views with the first video on government) Wallace clearly does not understand Rand's views on public policy. This interview was in 1959. Just think of the damage Wallace has done to our American system of government over his long career at CBS. Ayn Rand's conclusions in the area of government and public policy is spot on, however, her philosophy of objectivism falls short of her claims (for a good critique on Ayn Rand see the book: Without A Prayer: Ayn Rand and the Close of Her System by John W. Robbins ( ISBN-10: 0940931508 ISBN-13: 978-0940931503 )
Just as an aside, I would recommend starting reading of Ayn Rand with Capitalism the Unknown Ideal and then move on to Atlas Shrugged.
