Charmie was a twelve year old (possibly older) Pomeranian who was left at the Luzerne County SPCA because her family was moving and she was, apparently, too much trouble to take along. She spent ten days in the shelter until we became her foster home in January of 1999.
Charmie had many of the infirmities of old age...she had cataracts, was hard of hearing, incontinent, with congestive heart failure, and didn't have any teeth, but she had a wonderful spirit and was aptly named because she was full of charm. She was very sociable and got along with other dogs and cats as long as they were polite to her...otherwise, being so tiny and fragile, she was afraid.
This little old girl only weighed 3 1/2 pounds when we got her. But, she had a wonderful appetite and quickly reached 5 pounds. Her favorite treat while with us was Tender Vittles moist cat food. She would beg for each piece by standing on her tiny hind legs while waving her front legs, smiling all the while.
While with us, Charmie spent a good deal of her time sleeping. She would go to bed (in her crate that she loved) each night by 7:00, get up in the morning to have breakfast, then go right back to sleep until 11 a.m.
During her waking hours, Charmie was a normal little dog, trotting around, wagging her tail. She enjoyed being outside in her fenced in yard, and liked to play, although she tired quickly. She loved to be held, and would fall asleep on your shoulder. She also liked to be brushed, something that was necessary daily to keep her coat pretty. When Charmie came into the shelter, her fur was matted and not very attractive, but she turned into a beautiful little girl.
On Sunday, February 7, 1999, Charmie went to her new home with Monika and her family in Maryland where she was loved dearly and got plenty of TLC.
Charmie's little body finally gave up the good fight, and on November 11, 1999, she left the loving arms of Monika to go to the Rainbow Bridge.
Charmie was saved from being a throw-away, and lived out the end of her life loved and giving love and joy. How many more are there out there just like her? Charmie would want everyone to know that inside every little furry being, no matter how old or infirm, there is a spirit and a joy for living that is the gift offered to everyone who loves and cares for them.
Rest in peace sweet Charmie.
