The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) mandated the adoption of standard unique identifiers for health care providers, known as National Provider Identifiers (NPI).  Highmark, one of the largest health insurers in the United States, formed a Program Management Office (PMO) to address the complexities associated with the implementation of these new identifiers within their many interrelated software systems.  As the Issue and Risk Coordinator in the NPI PMO, maintained responsibility for documenting, researching, and coordinating the actions necessary to address identified issues and mitigate risks to both the program and the firm.  Issue management was accomplished using a Lotus Notes database.  Risks were managed using IBM Rational ClearQuest.  All responsibilities were executed in a highly successful manner.
