It is important to explain that this is not a "how-to" book or a "tribute" type book, but a serious photo documentary. The book will feature:

• Approximately 90 black and white photographs
• accompanying text, essays
• a directory of demo derby facts and information of interest to derby fans
• an extensive bibliography for anyone wishing to do further reading
• companion website with additional text, photos, and links

The photos in this book emphasize the human side of the sport, and many behind-the-scenes events people in the stands never get to see: drivers and pit crews working and socializing in and around the pit, backyard car building, junkyards, and much more. A list of all the smartass sayings people paint on their cars will also be included.

The first edition will be in soft cover and cost $29.95. A second, limited edition hardcover version will be released next year, for 39.95.

Production work -- page layouts, design, picture sequencing, etc. is going very well. We plan to go to press this spring, and the book will be available by summer 2004. An excerpt from the project is being exhibited at Penn College of Technology, in Williamsport, PA, beginning January 20. (21 prints, 20" x 24", they look terrific) Additional exhibits will be held around the country, and they will be listed here and on the new, redesigned companion website for the book.

• The Crash Burn Love project was featured in the December16 issue of the Daily Telegraph in Britain.
• "Classic American", a British magazine on American car culture, has an article on the project in this month’s edition.
• Penn College of Technology Exhibit, Williamsport, PA, January 20: I expected 25-30 people to show up for my talk at the opening reception. Over 125 attended, standing room only…needless to say, I was scared to death, but the audience was very supportive and asked plenty of questions, so it turned out great. Thanks to everyone who came.

 Thanks to all the people who have e-mailed their encouragement and support from around the world. Since I began this page in June of 2003, I’ve heard from all across the USA, England, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand! There is an incredible number of demo derby enthusiasts on this planet. (My research has revealed there are an estimated 60,000 competitors alone in the USA… with over 1,000,000 fans attending events each year.)
